Malaysia’s engineering support industry (ESI) covers various activities such as moulding, machining, metal stamping, casting, surface engineering, heat treatment and forging.

The dynamic landscape of Malaysia’s M&E industry is supported by a deep and diverse network, where over 90 per cent of the companies involved in the ESI are agile Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs). This extensive ESI ecosystem is critical to ensuring competitive pricing, close proximity and reliable supply chains for larger industry players.

To meet the rapid execution speeds demanded by global supply chain de-risking strategies, the ESI is actively moving away from fragmented, standalone operations. A great example of this shift is the Penang Automation Cluster (PAC), a joint venture created by three local tech manufacturers: ViTrox, Pentamaster and Walta Engineering. PAC serves as a one-stop hub where multinational corporations (MNCs) and large local companies can source precision metal components and engineering solutions. By bringing specialised small and medium enterprises (SMEs) together under one ecosystem, the cluster enables faster and more efficient sourcing processes. The participating companies work closely in an integrated manner to ensure smooth production operations while strengthening resilience against global trade disruptions.
