Perak ready to welcome China’s investment into automotive industry, says MB

12 Apr 2023

The Perak government will provide the necessary infrastructure to welcome China’s automotive investment in Tanjung Malim, says Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad.

The Perak Mentri Besar said among the infrastructures being planned was to provide more affordable houses and schools.

“As we know, Proton has changed its location of operations from Shah Alam to Tanjung Malim and that includes their vendors, such as Geely too.

“We had a meeting chaired by state secretary Datuk Ahmad Suaidi Abdul Rahim where the focus would be on providing the necessary infrastructure to cater to the number of workers who will come to Tanjung Malim,” he told reporters after distributing Hari Raya Aidilfitri goodies to uniformed volunteers at the state secretariat banquet hall here today (April 12).

During his recent visit to China on April 1, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysia has clinched a record RM170bil worth of investments from China with 19 memoranda of understanding.

Among the highlights would be the development of a high-technology automotive valley in Tanjung Malim focusing on new energy vehicles.

Saarani said the state has also made a request to the Education Ministry to add more schools in Tanjung Malim.

“Imagine if there are 7,000 workers with 7,000 families and they have at least three children.

“We would have 21,000 schooling children,” he said.

“We will conduct a census to get the right figures and propose the proper sites for the schools,” he said, adding that the Proton Holding Berhad will fully relocate from Shah Alam to Tanjung Malim by 2027.
