Thong Guan Industries fully utilising RE for polyethylene packaging production plants

Thong Guan Industries fully utilising RE for polyethylene packaging production plants

22 Jul 2022

Thong Guan Industries Bhd is now exclusively using renewable energy as the source of its electricity supply at its polyethene packaging production plants.

This was made possible through the Green Electricity Tariff (GET) programme, launched by the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources (KeTSA) in partnership with TNBX Sdn Bhd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB), in November 2021.

Through its GET subscription, Thong Guan can meet its environmental, social and governance (ESG) commitments to carbon footprint reduction.

The company said its GET subscription started in the first quarter (Q1) of 2022, which positions it as the largest GET subscriber in Kedah and among the top 10 in Malaysia.

“We hope our contribution will create awareness among our customers and the public on the importance of low carbon products while we support the growth of the local renewable energy industry,” managing director Datuk Ang Poon Chuan said.

Thong Guan executive director Datuk Ang Poon Khim said this was a strategic decision to do its part for customers.

“Sustainability is everyone’s responsibility. We are all accountable for the industry’s future,” he said.

TNB chief retail officer Datuk Ir Megat Jalaluddin Megat Hassan said that since GET was made available in December 2021, the response has been most encouraging.

“The allocated 4.5 million MWh (megawatt hour) quota was fully subscribed in four months.

“The industrial sector took up the majority at 61 per cent, including Thong Guan, which undertook an annual subscription of 116,520 MWh,” he added.
