Tetra Pak and recycler in joint investment to modernise recycling facility

15 Sep 2022

Tetra Pak and S.H.A. Hup Aik Sdn Bhd (SHA) yesterday announced a joint investment of RM4.65 million to modernise SHA’s polyAl recycling facility in Klang, increasing its recycling capacity from 1.4 tonnes per day (TPD) to 8 TPD.

In a statement yesterday, Tetra Pak managing director for Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines and Indonesia Michael Wu said the upgraded technology would significantly improve the quality of the polyAl products, boosting its demand.

The facility is expected to be re-launched in the first quarter of next year.

PolyAl, or polymer aluminum, is a type of carton packaging material which can be recycled.

“Besides enhancing the commercial value of polyAl materials for the recycling industry, the partnership will also encourage collective action among stakeholders, ” he said.

He said the collaboration represents a significant step forward for both companies to support Malaysia’s journey towards sustainability by boosting the recyclability of Tetra Pak’s carton packaging all the way down to the polyAl component.

He said this investment is a proactive action to maintain the circularity of cartons, to ensure that they are collected, sorted and recycled in order to continue to provide value.

Tetra Pak is a food processing and packaging solutions company.
