Petronas, Terengganu MBI explore building mini hydro power plant

09 Jun 2023

Petronas Gas Bhd (PetGaS) is exploring the prospect of developing a mini hydro power plant and managing a terminal in Terengganu.

PetGas today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Terengganu’s Menteri Besar Incorporated (MBI) on the prospects that, if materialised, would strengthen the state’s economic development.

The parties would jointly assess the feasibility of the projects, they said.

State secretary Tengku Datuk Farok Hussin Tengku Abd Jalal said the collaboration would create new opportunities and benefit the people of Terengganu, in line with its long-term Terengganu Sejahtera Master Plan (PITAS 2030).

He said the proposed development of a small hydro power plant along the rivers in Dungun was aligned with the strategic core of PITAS 2030, namely infrastructure enhancement, empowerment of green technology and disaster impact control.

“This project is seen as a critical renewable energy (RE) solution to address the challenges of electricity supply, especially in remote rural areas,” he said at the signing ceremony here today.

Tengku Farok added that the power plant project can also be viewed as a critical RE solution to electric supply challenges, especially for remote areas.

“As for the proposed cooperation in the management, operation and maintenance of the terminal by a Terengganu government-linked company, it is seen as a strategic and impactful step towards economic empowerment, at the same time offering opportunities for employment and sharing of technical skills,” he added.
