MOSTI committed to ensure graphite, graphene market in Malaysia is of global standard

MOSTI committed to ensure graphite, graphene market in Malaysia is of global standard

01 Aug 2022

The collaboration of Graphjet Technology Sdn Bhd with Toyoda Trike Corporation and Asia Development Capital Ltd can provide great benefits to the Malaysian and Japanese economies, said Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba.

He believes that in the long term, the marketing of graphene produced by Graphjet will benefit Malaysia because it has the potential to supply local companies with graphene products under the ‘Graphenovation’ programme.

“It will also enable Malaysia to become an exporter of graphene in the world one day in addition to being an incentive for companies that want to take advantage of the great potential of graphene to invest in Malaysia,” he said in a statement today.

Adham today witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Graphjet and Toyoda and Asia Development Capital Ltd.

Through the MoU, Toyoda, which is a leading company from Japan and well-known internationally, has been granted the exclusive right to distribute graphite and graphene produced by Graphjet in Japan.

Looking at Toyoda’s strong track record and Japan as one of the main hubs of the automotive industry, the collaboration would be able to promote Malaysian-made graphene materials.

Graphjet has pioneered an innovative approach to producing graphene from palm kernels. This patented technology is a solution that will advance the development of graphene.

The technology that uses palm kernel as the main ingredient in the production of graphene also gives Malaysia an advantage to supply raw materials in the production of graphene since Malaysia is one of the world’s largest producers of palm oil.

Adham said the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) also suggested that Graphjet establish a partnership with NanoMalaysia Bhd (NMB) especially in the supply chain and development of downstream products and applications of graphene, in addition to obtaining GrapheneVerify certification to gain domestic and international recognition for the product.

GrapheneVerify is a programme under NanoVerify Sdn Bhd, a wholly owned company of NMB which is an agency under MOSTI to encourage the participation of Malaysian graphene players in the global graphene market which is estimated at US$267 billion in the next five years.

Under the 11th Malaysia Plan, NMB has been given the responsibility to implement the National Graphene Action Plan 2020 (NGAP 2020).

To date, 61 projects have been activated and 40 intellectual properties have been filed involving 50 local small and medium enterprises, including start-ups.

These projects have created over 15,000 job opportunities for Keluarga Malaysia.
