Manufacturing sales grew 1.7 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y) to RM118.5 billion in August 2020, according to the Monthly Manufacturing Statistics report published by the Department of Statistics.

Chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the growth was driven by the increase in transport equipment and other manufactured products (16.2 per cent), food, beverages and tobacco products (12.8 per cent) and electrical and electronics products (7.1 per cent).

However, on a month-on-month basis, the sales value decreased 0.5 per cent compared with July 2020.

“The total number of employees engaged in the manufacturing sector in August 2020 was 2,190,787 persons, a decrease of 2.5 per cent compared to 2,247,795 persons in August 2019,” he said.

Salaries and wages paid during the month amounted to RM7.11 billion — a decline of 3.2 per cent y-o-y or RM232.1 million.

“The average salaries and wages per employee was RM3,247 in August 2020, while the sales value per employee rose by 4.3 per cent y-o-y to RM54,112,” he said.
