Industries told to embark on circular economy initiatives promoted by MPC

10 Oct 2020

Industries have been urged to embark on circular economy (CE) initiatives as initiated by the Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC) to facilitate the transition of industry towards a more sustainable business environment.

In a statement, MPC deputy director general Zahid Ismail said besides improving and ensuring resources productivity, the initiatives would also encourage the industry players to rethink on new ways of producing and consuming towards a healthier environment.

“Currently, MPC is conducting a study on potential application of CE concept in the aquaculture and livestock industry, a collaboration project with the Department of Fisheries and Department of Veterinary Services to develop a framework on the implementation of CE in these industries.

“The framework is expected to assist industry players to keep resources in use for as long as possible, minimise residual waste as well as recover and regenerate products and materials. Engagement with industry players is carried out through several means such as company visits, online meetings and verification workshops,” he said.

He also said the initiatives had been conducted since early January 2020 focusing on priority sectors as highlighted in the Malaysia Productivity Blueprint, namely manufacturing, agriculture and services.

Promoting a circular enterprise is a way forward where the production process is using less materials due to innovative design or technological advancement as well as increasing the rate of recycling and reducing waste.

“Based on the CE concept, materials and products are recirculated, their value is fully utilised, and wastage is minimised.

“It starts at the design stage where products are designed for reuse, repair and recycling instead as for being discarded when it is not functioning,” said Zahid in conjunction with the Stakeholders Engagement for Circular Economy Initiatives in Livestock Production workshop held recently.

The workshop provided a platform for stakeholders to gain experience in the recycling system and learn about the circular economy in Taiwan and best practices of Taiwan circular economy award-winning companies.

On upcoming activities, he said a virtual session on CE Toward Sustainability Development, a collaboration with Asian Productivity Organisation, was scheduled for early December 2020.
