The increase in direct investment abroad (DIA) in 2022, especially in the finance, mining, manufacturing and agriculture sectors, showed the high competitiveness of Malaysian companies in expanding, competing and participating in regional and global supply chains.
The Ministry of International Trade and Industry (Miti) said the total DIA of Malaysian companies increased 10.1 per cent to RM602.1 billion in 2022 compared to RM547.0 billion in the previous year.
The ministry, referencing data from the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM), said DIA showed a significant increase last year, with the highest investments being to Singapore (RM126.8 billion, followed by Indonesia (RM63.5 billion) and the Netherlands (RM38.8 billion).
“While for 2021, direct investment abroad showed the highest investment to Singapore (RM109.4 billion), followed by Indonesia (RM51.6 billion) and the United Kingdom (RM35.2 billion),” it said.
The ministry was responding to a question from Bukit Gantang MP Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal, who wanted to know the position of the country’s investment abroad and total investment for 2021 and 2022.
“The manufacturing sector registered RM53.7 billion in 2021 and increased 10.8 per cent in 2022 to RM59.5 billion,” it said in a written reply published on the Parliament’s website today.
