Ascott upbeat on Malaysia, eyes footprint expansion

03 Mar 2022

CapitaLand Investment Ltd’s (CLI) wholly owned lodging business unit The Ascott Ltd is upbeat about its prospects in Malaysia and aims to expand its footprint in this market despite the Covid-19 pandemic.

Ascott’s country general manager for Malaysia, Mondi Mecja said he looked forward to the return of travel in 2022 with borders opening and vaccinated travel lanes materialising.

“We are excited to bring this positive momentum into 2022 and introduce more of what Ascott has to offer. With a significant global brand presence across the industry of hospitality and tourism, Ascott will continue to grow its footprints in Malaysia.

“By the third quarter of 2022, we are expecting to welcome three more exciting properties which will be located in Kuala Lumpur and Penang,” he said at the official opening of Ascott Gurney Penang here on Thursday (March 3).

Ascott Gurney Penang is owned by Plenitude Bhd, a Main Market-listed company with investments in hospitality and property development and it would be managed by The Ascott Ltd.

Located along a seafront promenade in the heart of bustling George Town, Ascott Gurney Penang caters to both business and leisure travellers as well as corporate long-stay guests with various facilities such as infinity swimming pool, gymnasium and children’s playroom.

The 37-storey Ascott Gurney Penang offers 271 modern apartments, ranging from studios, one- and two-bedroom apartments with separate living and dining areas, fully equipped kitchen, as well as built-in washer and dryer.

In Penang, Ascott had also recently opened the Sky Residence Prai in November last year, which is gaining traction from business travellers and families alike.

Sky Residence Prai sales and marketing senior manager, Lee Ai Leng said that among the hotel’s selling points are its huge room size which starts from 39 sq m as well as its location that is near the industrial areas in Bukit Mertajam, on top of amenities such as swimming pool and gymnasium.

“The huge space this hotel provides makes it attractive for family travellers. We are also getting a lot of corporate clients from the surrounding factories who will stay with us for up to nine months

“When we first opened in November, our occupancy rate was about 20% which soared to 60% in December 2021,” she added.

Sky Residence Prai offers 168 contemporary units ranging from studios to two-bedroom apartments with the fully-furnished apartments featuring a modern interior to provide a spacious and comfortable home away from home for guests.
