Anwar: Clear economic policies, political stability will keep drawing investors to Malaysia

22 May 2023

Malaysia will continue to draw major foreign investment due to its clear economic policies, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

During the question-and-answer session in Dewan Rakyat today, Anwar said confusion over the government’s policies should not arise in the first place, as Malaysia had shown strong economic performance and seen an increase in high-value investments during the first quarter of 2021.

“If our policies are confusing, how can our economic growth exceed Indonesia, Vietnam and China? If it is confusing, it is not possible for investments to come (in).

“(And) within just a month of our trip back from China, Geely Holding Group Co Ltd has come here (to Malaysia) and asked to expedite the Automotive High-Technology Valley project in Tanjung Malim.”

Anwar said this in response to a supplementary question from Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin (Perikatan Nasional-Larut) on the country’s economic plans following complaints over the confusion of tenders for government projects from businesses and corporate sectors.

He also stressed that Malaysia’s clear economic policies and political stability had attracted the confidence of foreign investors.

“The political stability is reassuring, and investment is thriving more than before. This shows that clear policies (by the government) had attracted them. Hence, I don’t see how this is a problem.”
