AMD Malaysia to expand with new state-of-the-art facility in Penang

AMD Malaysia to expand with new state-of-the-art facility in Penang

23 Mar 2023

AMD Global Services (M) Sdn Bhd is expanding its global business services (GBS) and engineering capabilities with a new state-of-the-art office space and lab facility in Penang.

AMD executive vice-president Datuk Devinder Kumar said Penang has played a pivotal role in both the semiconductor ecosystem globally and in the assembly and test operations for AMD leadership technology products for more than 50 years.

“Our new facility in Bayan Lepas will increase our total headcount and capability to support growth across our global business services and engineering expertise.

“We are pleased to partner with InvestPenang to mark another important milestone in our long-standing business presence in Malaysia,” he said during the investment announcement by Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow here today.

Devinder said through this investment and with the continued support from the Penang government, AMD remains committed to driving innovation in Penang to deliver new capabilities which would advance scientific research, data centre, and communications.

In June last year, AMD’s supplier and partner, TF AMD Microelectronics Sdn Bhd, announced a RM2 billion investment for a new manufacturing facility in Penang.

Meanwhile, Chow said the expansion of AMD will be situated at the Penang Development Corporation’s RM200 million GBS by the Sea building in Bayan Lepas.

He said the GBS by the Sea is expected to be completed by 2024 and will include a nine-storey office building and a six-storey multi-level car park with a net lettable floor space of about 300,000 square feet (sq ft).

Chow added that AMD Global Services will be taking up about 70% of the building space, or about 209,000 sq ft.

AMD Malaysia was established in 1972 with its first manufacturing facility in Penang. Since then, it has grown to more than 800 employees spanning two Global Shared Services facilities in Penang and Cyberjaya.
