Toray Industries Inc. has been founded in Japan in 1926. It is a chemical conglomerate which has diversified its businesses worldwide. Toray’s operation in Malaysia, which commenced in the 1970’s, represents one of Toray’s major investments outside Japan. Collectively known as Toray Group (Malaysia) and under the supervision of Toray Industries (Malaysia), Toray operates seven manufacturing plants in Penang’s strategic industrial parks through Penfibre, Penfabric and Toray Plastics (Malaysia) and a joint-venture Toray BASF PBT Resin in Kuantan, Pahang. Currently, the Group undertakes the manufacturing and marketing of Polyester Staple Fibres, Textiles (finished fabric, yarn-dyed fabric and grey yarn for sewing thread), Engineering Plastic (ABS & PBT) Resins and Polyethylene Terephthalate Film (Polyester Film), including Battery Separator Films.

Besides the on-going plant modernisation and expansion activities, other joint-ventures, International Procurement Centre and servicing companies, Toray Malaysia Systems Solution was established to complement the Group’s operations locally or abroad.

Since inception more than 47 years ago, Toray was attracted to the Malaysia’s stable economic and political climate, strategic location, well-integrated raw material supply chain, modern infrastructure, abundant energy resources, generous tax and investment incentives as well as a highly skilled workforce.

More importantly, Toray has been receiving tremendous support, advice and assistance from the Federal authorities, especially MIDA and MITI, which has helped us to grow from strength to strength in tandem with Malaysia’s economic development. Toray endeavours to continue to expand its Malaysia’s operations through innovative projects that will move our Group up the value chain regionally” says Toray Chief Representative in Malaysia cum Managing Director of Toray Industries (Malaysia), Mr Teh Hock Soon.

As a responsible corporate citizen, Toray is dedicated to conserving our green environments and contribute back to the local communities via the various CSR projects. Among them, the establishment of Malaysia Toray Science Foundation to promote science and technology in Malaysia since 1993 and the donation of Toray-USM Knowledge Centre at USM, Olympic-size swimming pool complex in Seberang Jaya and Electronic video scoreboard Batu Kawan stadium.

Sony started manufacturing audio/visual products in Malaysia since the 1980s. We manufacture high technology products such as DVD, CD-RW, flat screen, TV, audio products and hi-fi sets. Cumulatively we have invested more than RM2 billion in this country.

Malaysia is an excellent place to do business. The Malaysian government has shown exemplary support through excellent infrastructure development and a good education system that allows us to employ a high quality workforce.

There is in existence a large pool of component suppliers in Malaysia, thus we have transferred from Singapore and established an International Procurement Office here for sourcing parts to other Sony companies worldwide.

Malaysia’s political and economical stability has been and will continue to provide and ideal investment climate for us to prosper.

Sharp has been in Malaysia for over 25 years now and is still expanding. To-date we have six companies employing a total of more than 8,500 people. Each company has its own specialisation in manufacturing products for the export and domestic markets.

Sharp Electronics (M) Sdn. Bhd. (SEM) has been in Malaysia for six years and is the youngest among Sharp’s companies in Malaysia. As an R&D centre, SEM has enabled our staff to undertake research, design, development and testing of new products, besides serving as a global procurement centre and service and parts distributor.

Malaysia’s attractive workforce made it possible for the integration of our R&D activities in this country. 250 out of Sharp’s 650 Malaysian engineers work at SEM. Our local engineers are very creative and are actively involved in the design and development of our products.

Malaysia is Sharp’s largest offshore export production base in the world. We find Malaysia an ideal place for investment for many reasons.

Firstly, the government is very supportive of companies investing in Malaysia – our problems are solved quickly and assistance is readily available. SEM’s application for operational headquarters status was made convenient and without hassle. Our achievement of ISO 14001 certification in December 1999 is another result of the support of the local government.

Another benefit to us is that Malaysia has become a production site for many companies involved in the electrical and electronics industry. Numerous manufacturers of finished products, parts and raw materials co-exist here, and because of this competitive environment, Malaysia is able to offer high quality products at competitive prices.
