Johor returns as medical tourism destination after international borders reopen

Johor has returned as a medical tourism destination with the reopening of Malaysia’s international borders, receiving patients from abroad at hospitals in the state.
KPJ Johor Specialist Hospital is no exception, as it received patients from Indonesia as soon as the country’s borders were reopened on April 1.
Its chief executive officer Mohd Azhar Abdullah said its comprehensive facilities and services were among the factors that made Indonesian citizens choose the hospital to receive treatment.
He said the hospital received 10 patients a day from Indonesia, especially from Batam and Tanjung Pinang, be it for new patients or follow-up treatment, after medical appointments were postponed during the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Our services are comprehensive and thorough with the available experts. These reasons are why we are chosen.
“In Johor, we have a very close culture with Indonesia and so they (Indonesians) feel very comfortable coming here. They also trust our services and facilities,” he told reporters when met at the hospital here on Wednesday (April 6).
He said apart from that, Indonesian medical tourists pick our hospital because our team offers a round-trip delivery service either to hospitals, hotels, or other destinations they want to go to.
Meanwhile, Merina, 34, a medical tourist from Indonesia, chose to seek treatment at the hospital because of its good service and treatment provided.
Accompanied by her husband, Gunawan, 34, Merina said she made an appointment with the hospital as soon as she heard that Malaysia’s international borders were reopened.
“My friends in Batam recommended this hospital for its services and specialist doctors… so I immediately made an appointment with the hospital for treatment,” she added.
