Circular BioEconomy (CBE) Unit

Our Functions

  • To develop leads and facilitate potential investments for circular bioeconomy projects by domestic and international investors
  • Development and coordination of biomass feedstock supply chain involving resource owners and all relevant stakeholders to create sustainable local value chain to support higher value added investments. This covers all sources of sustainable biomass such as products agricultural sectors from oil palm, dedicated crops, industrial plantation, municipal waste and algae
  • Development and building of Circular Bioeconomy ecosystems with industry players, government agencies, regulators, financial institutions, and other biomass based supply chains. This includes coordination and development for a strategic project that cut across various divisions within MIDA
  • Facilitate the evaluation of applications for manufacturing licenses, tax incentives and matching grants available for Circular Bioeconomy projects and developments
  • Monitor the investments leads, development of approved projects and evaluate post-approval applications
  • Conduct conferences, seminars, workshops and specific project missions to attract foreign and domestic investment as well as to encourage expansion/diversification by existing companies
  • Organise dialogues with industry associations to identify the roadblocks and direction of the industry towards the development of a comprehensive industry ecosystem in Malaysia
  • Create awareness and need to transitions towards green and circular industry of the future aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG) standards for sustainability and societal impact of an investment
  • Project and Areas covered:
    • Bioenergy & Biofuels
    • Biochemical
    • Biomass based End-Product
    • Waste to Wealth Projects
    • BioHub and Cluster Developments
  • Additional Roles of the unit are to:
    • create new circular economic and symbiotic business models to transform the resource-based industry value chain in Malaysia that includes waste stream utilisation to offer vast economic growth and new business opportunities;
    • develop and deploy Circular Bioeconomy projects that offer complete systems design and solutions with a highly localised value chain through innovative partnership models and game-changing technologies to create additional wealth and high-value job opportunities for Malaysians;
    • develop and enable the region's leading Circular Bioeconomy ecosystem to allow businesses and investors to capture opportunities and accelerate the transition to Circular Economy
    • explore business opportunities and connect all stakeholders towards embracing the circular concept and sustainable elements in project development and investments that will bring sustainable biomass and bio-resources ventures to greater heights
