KKIP Aerospace Training Centre for Sabahan youth in aircraft maintenance – CM

10 Jul 2020

The KKIP Aerospace Training Centre here will be a platform to attract more young Sabahans to join the aircraft technical and maintenance industry, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.

He said the centre would also earn significant returns for the industry in its efforts to ensure sufficient skilled manpower for aircraft maintenance in the future.

“Once the tourism industry is mobilised, I’m quite sure the aircraft will be utilised as well as the private airline will revive again, thus, (the aircraft) maintenance will be there too.

“We need to train our young people through the KKIP Aerospace Training Centre and disseminate the right knowledge to them to make sure we have proper kind of (aircraft) maintenance here (in Sabah),” he told reporters after an official visit to the facility, today.

Accompanying Mohd Shafie were Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau, who is also state Trade and Industry Minister, and Deputy Chief Minister cum Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew.

Also present were KKIP Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Melvin Disimond and KKIP Aerospace Sdn Bhd chairman Dr Oh Ei Sun.

The training Centre is set to be a leading aerospace facility in Southeast Asia under the Malaysian Aerospace Industry Blueprint.

It is equipped with a hangar, classrooms and workshops; 120 air-conditioned hostel rooms furnished with bed sets, study tables and wardrobes as well as a shared washroom and laundry room.

It also owns Autogyro Cavalon 915 and Hawker Siddeley HS-125-400A aircraft.

Meanwhile, Tangau in his speech congratulated KKIP Aerospace Sdn Bhd, a wholly owned subsidiary of KKIP Sdn Bhd and its joint venture partner LembaranAsia Sdn Bhd for the development of the aerospace training centre.

“I understand that this is going to be the first approved aircraft maintenance training centre in Malaysia that is having dual approval – the first being the local Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia, and an international endorsement under the European Aviation Safety Agency Part 147 to conduct Category A1 Aircraft Maintenance Technician training.

“The graduates of KKIP Aerospace Training Centre will be equipped with comprehensive skills, spaced out into 12 modules.

“Amongst others, training will commence in the areas of avionics, engine, body and composite works both in theory as well as on-the-job-training in this hangar building and also hangars of collaborating MROs (maintenance and repair organisations),” he said.

Tangau added that graduates of Category A1 Aircraft Maintenance Technicians would be accorded dual licensing to work in the aerospace industry, allowing the graduates to not only gain employment within the local aerospace industry but also internationally.

At the event, Mohd Shafie also witnessed the signing of four memorandums of understanding (MoU) between MASWings Sdn Bhd and Mega Aerospace Centre Sdn Bhd; Layang-Layang Aerospace Sdn Bhd and KKIP Aerospace Sdn Bhd; CAAC Malaysia Sdn Bhd and Mega Aerospace Centre Sdn Bhd; and Bataras and Department of Industrial Development and Research.

The MoUs involve collaborations in establishing an aerospace training hub, job training as well as anchor-vendor development programmes.
