WHS, GML exploring collaboration to bring electric city bus service to Sabah

27 Mar 2021

Warisan Harta Sabah Sdn Bhd (WHS), a wholly-owned investment arm of the Sabah state government, is exploring a collaboration with Gemilang Coachwork Sdn Bhd (GML) to introduce the electric city bus service in the state.

In a statement, GML said that a team from WHS had visited GML’s manufacturing plant in Senai, Johor, as part of a feasibility study on setting up a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in Kota Kinabalu.

During the visit, WHS was briefed about GML’s capabilities, including bus manufacturing, information technology infrastructure, operating control and information centre and fare collection system.

GML had also shared its vision of promoting zero-emission vehicles in Malaysia, backed by its strong track record which includes BRT Sunway and the recently launched Kuching Metro Electric City Bus, it said.

“WHS will receive the technical knowledge and support from GML to potentially become the turn-key project leader of BRT Kota Kinabalu, as the Sabah government has been looking into this project since as early as 2015,” it said.

WHS and GML also explored the possibility of bringing the manufacturing activities to Sabah.

Deemed as one of the significant projects to transform Greater Kota Kinabalu into a ‘Smart City’, the proposed BRT system will improve the well-being of the rakyat as well as upgrade the current transportation system and improve traffic flow, it added.
