Toray Industries Inc., Japan, is a chemical conglomerate with diversified businesses worldwide. In Malaysia, the Toray Group has been a pioneer partner in the country's industrial development, since 1971. Toray's investment in Malaysia represents one of the company's major investments outside Japan.

"More than 35 years ago, Toray Group was one of the pioneer corporations to set-up its operations in Penang, Malaysia. We were attracted by Malaysia's stable economic and political climate, well-integrated raw material supply chain, modern infrastructure, abundant energy resources, generous tax and other investment incentives as well as a highly skilled workforce. Most importantly, we have been receiving tremendous support and assistance from the Federal and State authorities and the relevant organisations. We are proud that Toray Malaysia Group has grown from strength to strength in tandem with Malaysia's economic development. Going forward, we are committed to expand our investments in Malaysia through innovative projects that will move our Group companies up the value chain,"says Managing Director of Toray Industries (Malaysia), Munehiro Se.

The Group under Toray Industries (Malaysia) Sdn Berhad operates seven manufacturing plants in Penang's strategic industrial parks through Penfibre Sdn Berhad, Penfabric Sdn Berhad and Toray Plastics (Malaysia) Sdn Berhad and a joint-venture project in Kuantan, Toray BASF PBT Resin Sdn Bhd. Over the years, the Group has expanded its polyester fibre and textile businesses and diversified into plastic (ABS & PBT) resins and polyester film. Currently, the Group has more than 3,200 employees, contributing about RM3.0 billion to the Toray Group's global sales in 2006.

Toray Malaysia Group's traditional business in textile is carried out at the four mills under Penfabric, a vertically integrated textile manufacturer involved in spinning, weaving, dyeing, printing and finishing operations to produce yarn, grey fabric, finished fabric, yarn-dyed fabric (gingham) and grey yarn for sewing thread, the bulk of which is exported all over the world, including Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the USA and the EU countries.

Penfibre first started as a producer of polyester fibre in 1973. With the setting-up of the Film Division in Penfibre in 1998, Toray Malaysia Group joined the ranks of the select group of Polyethylene Terephthalate Film (Polyester Film) producers in the world. The polyester film produced by Penfibre and marketed under the trade name "TORAY LUMIRROR" is a high performance engineering plastic film. These biaxially-oriented polyester films with high-quality mechanical, thermal and electrical properties are extensively used as components in the electrical, electronic and packaging industries.

Established in 1992, Toray Plastics (Malaysia) is Toray's first manufacturing base for ABS resins in South East Asia. Lightweight, strong and easily processable, these quality resins are marketed under ‘TOYOLAC' and is used in the injection and extrusion mouldings of automobile parts, electrical appliances, audio-visual and office automation components. In 2005, the company was approved to set-up an International Procurement Centre to undertake the procurement and distribution of finished products for its Group. Following the start-up of its multi-million Ringgit Technology Centre, Toray Plastics (Malaysia) also serves as the marketing, technological and customer support centre for Toray's plastic resin operations in the rapidly growing Asian region. The Toray BASF PBT Resin plant in Kuantan produces Polybutylene Terephthalate (PBT) resins marketed with the brand name of ‘TORAYCON'.

Toray Malaysia Group is dedicated to maintaining quality control and environmental conservation. Most of the Group's factories have received accreditation under the ISO 9001 Quality and ISO 14001 for Environment Management System Certifications. Toray's social contributions include, the sponsorship of an Olympic-size swimming pool complex in Seberang Jaya, a RM6.0 million electronic video scoreboard for the Batu Kawan stadium and the Malaysia Toray Science Foundation, which offers annual research grants and awards for the promotion of science and technology in Malaysia.

Toray Malaysia Group is fully committed to maintaining a strong presence in Malaysia and looks forward to continued growth in tandem with Malaysia's development.
