Mieco Chipboard Berhad (MIECO), the manufacturing division of the Bandar Raya Developments Berhad Group of Companies, was incorporated in 1972. The company was listed on the Main Board of the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange in 1998. MIECO commissioned its first production line in 1976, making it the pioneer in chipboard manufacturing in Malaysia using rubber wood which is now known as tropical oak wood.
MIECO has two factories with a total capacity of 300,000 cubic meters per annum which are located in Semambu and Gebeng in Kuantan, Pahang. MIECO's chipboards conform to international quality standards such as the European Community's BS EN 312 standard that is applicable for both moisture-resistant and non-moisture resistant boards with E1 and E2 formaldehyde emission levels. MIECO was approved for ISO 9002 Quality Management System accreditation by SIRIM QAS in 1998, and subsequently upgraded to ISO 9001:2000 in 2002.
After successfully establishing a market presence in the domestic market, MIECO went on an export campaign in 1995 and today, it exports to China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, South East Asia, the Indian Subcontinents, the Middle East, Africa and the Australasian countries. Currently, MIECO exports to more than 20 countries. In anticipation of the economic expansion in China, MIECO has set up a representative office in Guangzhou, China and a regional office in Hong Kong.
In line with its quality slogan of continuous improvement, MIECO has embarked on an expansion project by establishing a RM300 million plant with the latest German technology in Kuala Lipis that will provide the catalyst for the development of Kuala Lipis as the wood-based industry center for Pahang, Malaysia. This state-of-the-art plant will boost MIECO's capacity to over 940,000 cubic meters per annum and more than double MIECO's turnover and profitability. It will be the single largest line in Asia and is expected to be operational by early 2005.
Malaysia provides MIECO with a conducive business environment to operate profitably with positive factors such as the availability of raw wood and skilled labour, a sound infrastructure and a stable political environment. MIECO is confident its expansion in Malaysia will achieve even greater heights.
