OSRAM Opto Semiconductor Continues to Expand, Additional 1,480 Job Opportunities

Kulim, 23 November 2017 – “Osram is a good example of companies that has leveraged on Malaysia’s advantages and moved up the value chain. Being one of the 8 pioneer electronic companies, Osram has been an integral contributor to the nation’s social and economic wellbeing, investing millions of ringgits and creating thousands of job opportunities,” said YB Dato’ Sri Mustapa Mohamed, Minister of International Trade and Industry (MITI) at the Grand Opening Ceremony of Osram’s new semiconductor plant in Kulim Hi-tech Park, Kedah today.

“The company has invested a total of RM3 billion as at 2015, and is one of the largest employers in the northern region – employing more than 5,600 Malaysians so far. I am pleased to note that with this expansion, the company’s total investment as at October 2017 is now RM4.2 billion and will offer a total of 7,790 job opportunities by 2022, whereby 73% of these are for Malaysians. Around 67% of these jobs are for engineers in R&D and production activities. The company’s presence has also contributed to the development of the industry’s supply chain in Malaysia as it has engaged 600 vendors comprising local and foreign companies. With Osram’s state-of-the-art facility, Malaysia now has the world’s most advanced LED chip factory. This also means that Malaysia has a complete LED ecosystem here. This further enhances the country’s position to tap into the potentials of a rapidly expanding LED industry, towards becoming a LED manufacturing hub in the Asia Pacific region,” added YB Minister of MITI.

Also present at the event was Dato’ Azman Mahmud, Chief Executive Officer of the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), Dr. Olaf Berlien, Chief Executive Officer of Osram Group, Mr. Aldo Kamper, Chief Executive Officer of Osram Opto Semiconductors GmbH and Dr. Roland Mueller, Managing Director of OSRAM Opto Semiconductors Malaysia Sdn Bhd.

On congratulating Osram, Dato’ Azman reiterated that, “Osram’s continued expansion is testament that the country offers the right mix of strategic value propositions as a profitable place for companies to grow their business. Companies like these are a boost to the country’s E&E industry in terms of the development of local supply chain, particularly in the LED ecosystem. This is in line with Malaysia’s aspirations of attracting high quality investments and becoming a hub for high technology activities.”

In 2016, MIDA approved a total of 107 E&E projects with investments of RM9.24 billion. Of these, RM1.29 billion was from domestic sources while RM7.94 billion was from foreign sources. These have created over 16,200 job opportunities for the country. For the first half of this year, approved investments in the E&E industry recorded a total of RM5.8 billion, which is already 62.8% of the total approved investments in the E&E industry last year. These 47 projects will create additional 5,670 job opportunities.
