Manufacturing Sales in Aug’14 up 5.0%

Malaysia's manufacturing sales value in August 2014 added 5.0 % or RM2.7billion to post RM55.8billion as compared with the corresponding month in 2013, according to the latest statistical release from the Department of Statistics (DOS).

Month-on-month, the sales value in August 2014 increased by 1.7% or RM1.0 billion while on a seasonally adjusted basis, the sales value in August 2014 was 3.4% higher compared with the preceding month.

The year-on-year increase in sales value in August 2014 was mainly due to the higher sales in five major manufacturing industries- diodes, transistors and similar semiconductor devices (18.8%), electrical capacitors and resistors (39.2%); passenger cars (31.3%); plastics in primary forms (21.8%) and consumer electronics (8.2%).

The total employment in the manufacturing sector in August 2014 was 1,033,403persons, an increase of 1.7 % or 17,018 persons as compared with the same month last year. Compared with the preceding month, the total employees in the manufacturing sector in August 2014 added 0.2%. The total employment in July 2014 compared with the same month last year was a revised positive 1.3% to register 1,031,385persons.

Productivity or average sales value per employee in the manufacturing sector in August 2014 increased 3.2% to RM53,950 compared with the corresponding month in 2013. Month-on- month, the productivity in August 2014 increased by 1.5% while productivity in July was revised to RM53 166.

For the first eight months of the year, the sales value of the manufacturing sector increased by 7.3% to record RM435.3 billion while cumulatively, productivity for the same period rose 5.6% to RM421,214
