Shipping, which transports about 90% of global trade, is one of the contributors to marine pollution. Emissions of sulphur oxide (SOx) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) from ships into the atmosphere may cause global air pollution, human health issues and global warming. Efforts to reduce the harmful impacts of shipping have been initiated by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).
