Infineon Technologies AG is a world leader in semiconductor solutions that make life easier, safer and greener. Microelectronics from Infineon is the key to a better future. In Malaysia, Infineon operations encompass the full production value chain and end-to-end integrated semiconductor manufacturing, including R&D on technology, process and package development for next generation semiconductor chips and devices, especially in automotive and power semiconductor.
It has 45 years of backend excellence at its Melaka site and 13 years of frontend expertise at its Kulim, Kedah site – the company’s first and only fab facility in Asia. Infineon in Malaysia represents the company’s largest operations globally with a headcount of over 10,800 employees as of 2017, or about one-third of Infineon's workforce worldwide.
Infineon continues to transform its operations in Malaysia, and currently comprises 3 main operations in the country:-
- Infineon Technologies (Kulim) Sdn Bhd: Front end operation (wafer fabrication) in Kulim, Kedah
- Infineon Technologies (M) Sdn. Bhd.: Back end operations of advanced logic microelectronics products in Batu Berendam Free Trade Zone, Melaka
- Infineon Technologies (Advanced Logic) Sdn. Bhd.: Back end operations of power, discrete & sensors microelectronics products in Batu Berendam Free Trade Zone, Melaka
stability and a conducive business environment, coupled with strong government
support have been instrumental in Infineon’s decision to strengthen its
presence in Malaysia. MIDA in particular has been a fundamental in promoting investment
s opportunities, providing
critical linkages to various government and industry counterparts as well as
rendering valuable local insights to facilitate the ease of doing business in Malaysia.
This close collaboration helped pave the way for Infineon’s expansion of its Kulim wafer fab facility in 2016 to be a manufacturing competence centre, focusing on megatrend technologies for energy efficiency and automotive industries; and the launch of its latest production facility in Melaka in 2017, which incorporates Industry 4.0 elements – laying the foundation for Infineon to be one of the leaders in Smart Manufacturing for Malaysia.
With this, Infineon is poised to provide valuable opportunities to Malaysian engineers to develop their skillset through the company’s substantial in-house and overseas training by experts from across the globe. Infineon also works closely with the academia and government agencies to continuously develop required talent to position Malaysia as a semiconductor hub of the region.
