18 July 2016, Johor Bahru – Having been in Malaysia since 1998, Super Group – a leading regional integrated instant food and beverage manufacturer from Singapore, continues to add momentum to the building of a world-class business environment in Malaysia. This Forbes ‘Asia’s Top 200 Best under a Billion’ company announced its establishment of a Principal Hub (PH) in Johor today. With the PH establishment, Super Group’s Malaysian entity will now be the company’s regional centre for the procurement and distribution of its food ingredients business segment. As 85% of these products will be exported, the activity will increase the usage of local port facilities as well as other ancillary services such as logistics, banking and consultancy. It is also expected to contribute over RM826 million to Malaysia’s export by 2018.

In welcoming Super Group’s new PH establishment, Dato’ Azman Mahmud, Chief Executive Officer of the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) said the investment is a strong vote of confidence in the continued attractiveness of Malaysia as a competitive location for companies to tap into the emerging opportunities in Asia Pacific. Being located in Iskandar Malaysia, it will further enhance the visibility of this region as well as the state of Johor as a vibrant investment destination for international businesses. Complimented by its existing strength in electrical and electronics (E&E), oleo-chemical, petrochemical and food processing, Iskandar Malaysia is fast becoming an important services hub with focus areas on logistics, tourism, healthcare, education, creative as well as financial services. Super Group’s decision to establish its Principal Hub here is reflective of the confidence that it has on the value propositions offered by this region. The establishment is also a good example to highlight that the scheme is not confined to a specific area, but provides locational flexibility. In other words, companies can choose to establish their Principal Hub at any preferred location in Malaysia that best aligns with their strategic objectives.

“I am delighted that MIDA was able to play a role in facilitating this high value-added services project. Through the establishment of Super Group’s Principal Hub for global strategic sourcing, procurement and distribution, it will further complement and support its manufacturing operations in the region. The Principal Hub will now manage the entire supply chain network by undertaking research and development of high end food ingredients, brand management and strategic market planning for their entire network of companies in the Asia region.

Super Group, the pioneer in the development of 3-in-1 beverages in Southeast Asia, is a good example of how innovative companies can excel in Malaysia. The Government highly welcomes Super Group’s R&D activities as it is in line with our current aspiration to encourage more companies to invest and expand in such activities that will ultimately contribute to Malaysia’s well-being and future sustainability. With the establishment of the activities here, Super Group will recruit more Malaysians to engage in the R&D of new innovative products. To facilitate this, MIDA will work closely with the company to collaborate with R&D institutions to support this activity in the country,” Dato’ Azman added.

“Malaysia, owing to its close proximity to our Corporate Headquarters in Singapore, has a critical role to play in our Group’s development over the past years since 1998. Malaysia is the preferred hub where Super Group houses most of its vital key manufacturing capabilities. It now has one of the largest instant coffee plant in Southeast Asia with capacity of 20,000 metric tons. Super Group's investment in Malaysia has created social impact to the local communities through its job creation, upgrading of skillset of the local community, support to civic or macro-market projects, bringing in new and innovative technologies, goods and services to the country. We continue to view Malaysia as a vital centre for the Group’s business activities and we established our Malaysian facility as the Principal Hub in view of the vital strategic contribution of our Malaysian facilities,” said Mr Darren Teo, Executive Director of Super Group.

Since its introduction in May 2015 until June this year, MIDA has approved a total of 15 PH projects with total business spending worth RM8.69 billion. These investments are in the aerospace, E&E, food & beverage, engineering and resource-based industries. More than 1,000 high value jobs will be created and will lead to significant usage of local ancillary services worth RM526.4 million over a period of 10 years. “While these numbers are encouraging, we would like to urge more companies to follow in Super Group’s footsteps and leverage on this scheme as it will serve to raise their efficiency and profits as well as to enhance their supply chain,” added Dato’ Azman.
